Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based approach to preventing, treating, and reversing diseases by replacing unhealthy behaviors with positive ones. It focuses primarily on 6 domains: eating healthfully, being physically active, managing stress, avoiding risky substance use, getting adequate sleep, and having healthy relationships or a strong support system. The goal of Lifestyle medicine is to use therapeutic lifestyle behavior change as the primary modality to address the root cause of chronic disease. Lifestyle interventions are relatively inexpensive, accessible, and have been shown repeatedly to be effective in preventing, treating, and in some cases, reversing chronic disease. Approaches to behavior modification like Lifestyle medicine will become even more important as the burden of chronic disease continues to rise in both high- and low-income nations.
Primary care physicians can be well positioned to practice Lifestyle medicine and lead efforts to reduce the burden of chronic disease. They can be uniquely trained to provide care to people and families to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles and value whole-person, patient-centered care. The principles of lifestyle medicine are aligned with the values of primary health care in the use of lifestyle modification as the first-line treatment that meets patients’ need and expectations. The principles of Lifestyle Medicine can be incorporated into any medical specialty which is particularly suited for primary care specialties.
Several studies have shown that counseling by primary care physicians is effective at helping their patients modify behaviors such as attempting to lose weight, increasing physical activity, and improving diet. However, there have been gaps in the practice of lifestyle counseling interventions as only one-third or less of patients receive lifestyle counseling during ambulatory visits. Insufficient training or poor physician education has been cited by several studies as a major barrier to incorporating lifestyle counseling into clinical practice. Hence, the blue ribbon panel meeting hosted by the American College of Preventive Medicine garnered the consensus in 2009 that all practicing primary care physicians should possess the knowledge, skills, attributes, and values on 15 core competencies of Lifestyle Medicine. Hence, the Philippine College of Lifestyle Medicine, a newly affiliated Specialty Society under the Philippine Academy of Family Physician has brought Lifestyle Medicine Education and certification in the country to address the gaps.
